I am a soldier in the Army. So, when my commanding General called me from the battlefield, I did not hesitate although he called me by a different rank. First and foremost, I recognized His Call because I have always been His soldier. For, I am a Soldier in the Army of the Lord. You have been promoted the Master said, “Thank You for Your Service, Thou Good and Faithful Servant!”
Private Gregory Patrick Hughey answered his Master’s call to his final duty station, 17:50 pm, Monday, April 26, at the Charlie Norwood VA Medical Center, Augusta, GA. “At ease,” he now also rests with his loving Mother, Margie L. Wise Hughey, who preceded him to God’s bosom, both are now enlisted for eternity.
At an early age, Greg gave his life to Christ and became a member of Saron Baptist Church. There, he enjoyed singing on the Jubilee Choir and playing on the church softball team. He attended all public schools in Wagener graduating from Wagener-Salley High in 1987. Later, he served in the United States Army for 4 years, 1989-1992, during the Gulf War. His decorations, medals, badges, citations, and campaign ribbons awarded:
Army Service Ribbon
National Defense Service Medal
Sharpshooter Badge M-16
Army Commendation Medal
Southwest Asia Service Medal with Bronze Service Star-2
Kuwait Liberation Medal (Saudi Arabia)
Afterwards, Greg worked as a long-distance truck driver for many years before returning to school to receive his HVAC certification. Thereafter, he worked many years as a Maintenance Technician. He made his home in Birmingham, Alabama for the majority of his life. He joined with the Grace Covenant Worship Center. There, he faithfully served in the Men’s Ministry, as an Usher, and on the Security and Transportation Team. Greg’s faith and his fate has always been in God.
